Malmö Konstmuseum has a unique collection of arts and crafts that stretches back more than 4,000 years with over 6,000 objects in ceramics, glass, textiles, metal, furniture, and industrial design.
It contains significant collections of Swedish and European ceramics from the 15th century to today, glass where the Swedish 20th century glassworks are well represented, jewelry from the Renaissance to today, textiles such as textile prints, riots and cross-border expressions, style historical furniture and 20th century classics. In addition, there are collections of Chinese porcelain, antique objects, and musical instruments.
Through the items in the craft and design collection we can get an insight into the 18th century noble home and the 19th century bourgeoisie. This, in turn, gives an understanding of the 20th century’s social and political desire to create more affordable yet high quality products for the working class. The objects from the 1970s through today visualise how the boundaries of what is art, design, and handicrafts has been questioned and dissolved.
The items of a collection always mirror its time’s views on cultural heritage and what is seen as worthy of being preserved. Malmö Konstmuseum actively collects handicrafts and design of a high, artistic quality, artworks on the border of art and design, or items significant to stylistic evolution. Purchases are made using funds donated through wills for the purpose of collecting handicrafts and design. A large part of the collection also consists of donations.
